The Return Of The South Seas

I’m baaaack… is your old copy super tatty, or you missed out first time? You can upgrade your library HERE

The main reason the South Seas book went out of print was me. I’ve needed to get over myself. I had this idea that it was weird to keep on reprinting a project. I do really like the concept that there is no wastage, that all the Photo CPL Media book projects sell through. We aren’t flooding the market with copies that don’t all sell then become landfill. I could elaborate on this, that it’s a tried a tested business model that some publishers use, the book version of fast fashion. It doesn’t sit well with me. I could go deep, but it’d probably bore you. The point is, we don’t do that here.

Into the 4th print, that’s actually pretty cool, thank you all for picking up what we were trying to put down with the South Seas project.

As the publisher, part of the game is gauging when you’ve reached saturation point, are orders slowing down? Are your shops sitting on piles of copies. I do think the Revised Edition’s first run was affected by Covid and lockdowns and the downturn in the economy. Its sell through was a slower than the first version, but it did sell through. Also there was a shift to new projects, like the Recreationalists book, Warren Hawke’s books and of course the biggie Rambo’s Unbound Vol 1 . It’s not like I’ve been fucking around.

Super proud that we got a legend to pen some words about another NZ surfing legend

Miss this guy!

Shops kept asking for the South Seas. It was taken off the stock sheet, but orders would still come through. There would be emails every month ‘hey, where can I get a copy of the South Seas?’ There was an element of liking to be able to say it’s sold out. That it was an efficient, profitable project with no wastage.

We also took the opportunity to fix some captioning blunders… that will be talked about later

There comes a point, which in this case was quite a while ago, where I should have gone; there’s interest and demand. I really, really didn’t get over myself aye.

Pleasant surprises 1 and 2; seeing an image in print that you’d totally forgotten about and relive the session/s

Such a crazy bank!

As cheesy as it reads; The South Seas is back by popular demand. Surf Shops nationwide, literally Kaitaia to the Deep South have already restocked, as have the mainstream book stores. Would love that you support your local retailer… but if you don’t want to burn your precious fossil fuel reserves… ‘cos they are fricken precious right now!
